2009 Speaker’s Notes: Jodie Gastel

First, for those in my class who couldn’t see it because it was blocked by the school’s Parental Controls…

I was demo-ing how taking a theme that doesn’t look anything like you want, but it has a LAYOUT you like and turning it into something custom. The theme I started with was Connexion…

… and very quickly changed it into the BabesGoBare site:

Also… I didn’t get to extend the offer in class as we were zooming until the end… but I wanted to extend an offer to yyjWordCamp attendees only – those who would like a copy of my book that takes them through the setting up process in a less rushed way, I’ll offer my book at $25 until Wednesday morning.

Quadra Village, Lunch and Refreshments…

The event includes Level Ground coffee, tea, and Mount Doug Springs water.

Ambrosia Catering will be bringing in an array of sandwiches and dessert squares for lunch. A special thanks to our lunch sponsors, Sneakers Computers and Dial A Geek Consulting!

You may bring your own food, snacks, lunch, etc.

Quadra Village

If you’d prefer to have lunch out, or want to grab a late day snack, Quadra Village is your answer.

University Canada West is located in the heart of Quadra Village, and there are some great restaurants right in the area.

Right across the street from UCW is Caffe Fantastico, open 8am to 5pm. They serve specialty coffees, pastries and snack items.

Cafe Marrakech serves authentic Moroccan cuisine, and is open from 11am to 3pm and 5pm to 9pm.

Naanwich is like Indian fast food, only it’s delicious and nutritious. It’s open from 7:30am to 9pm.

Caribbean Village has some amazing smells! There is limited casual seating, and it is open from 7am to 6:30pm.

Young’s Restaurant serves Chinese food from 4pm to 10pm.

San Remo’s Deli is open from 10am to 5pm, and the restaurant is open from 11am to 10pm.

Fifth Street Bar and Grill, where I will be having dinner, has a restaurant open from 11am to 11pm, and the pub closes a little later (usually around midnight).

Pazetti’s Pizza and Pizza All Nite are in the area. I don’t know the hours, and there is very limited casual seating in both.

Taco Time is close by, serving Mexican fast food.

Fairway Market has a deli, and Mac’s is open 24 hours.

WordCamp Victoria 2009 is almost full!

If you have been waiting to buy your tickets, you don’t want to wait any longer! We have 70 people registered for WordCamp on November 14th, and have tentatively capped the attendance at 80.

We will be visiting the location on Tuesday to see how to accommodate more people without compromising the presentations, or making things uncomfortable or crowded. But don’t delay, as we may have to hold the line at 80 people for this first event.

Automattic

We are absolutely thrilled to have Lloyd Budd from Automattic come to the event.

Lloyd has agreed to make himself available for questions in the student lounge for a couple hours during the day, and will be featured on The WordCamp Roundup at the end of the day.

For those who haven’t heard of Automattic, they are the company that operates WordPress.com, but they are also the silent genuises behind the whole WordPress revolution. Shhh.

Lloyd also blogs at A Fool’s Wisdom.

The Campout

For those who haven’t been, a “Camp” is like a standard “Conference” in that it is educational, but unlike it in that it doesn’t need to be all that formal.

That said, many people like to know there is something “formal” going on, or they feel lost in the shuffle.

We’re offering both!

Yes, there will be a formal agenda for the day, with speakers, Q&A, workshops, panels, etc.

But there will also be “The Campout”, an opportunity for people to power up their laptops, connect in small groups and share their WordPress experiences with each other in an informal way.

Be Informal … Plan Ahead

While informal and impromptu is welcome on the day of the event, we also want you to have the opportunity to plan ahead. If there is something you really want to show off, demonstrate, discuss or otherwise conjure up, use the comments below as your “Campout” board.

Here’s how it will work:

  1. For your Campout, write a subject, time, contact person, and a sentence or two on your proposed topic (in the comments section below).
  2. We will attempt to compile these, and make topics available on a board at “The Campout” (in the Student Lounge) on November 14th.
  3. Show up and be ready, laptop in hand, at least 10 minutes before your Campout is scheduled to begin.
  4. Have fun!  No campfires, please.
